OK Boys & Girls - It's that time again to start the trip planning process for our Lake Powell & Hall's Crossing trip for spring 2014. I started last year's trip planning thread at about this same month/week so I guess it's never too early to start planning. I'm sure there are some of us out there, such as myself, that need the advance notice so they can schedule next year's vacation time with work.
Guess the first question to ask is when? Last year we went for 7 days from Saturday, April 27th to Saturday, May 4th. Do we want to do something similar which would put this year's 7 day trip from Saturday, April 26th to Saturday, May 3rd? Guess I'll add a poll to get a concensus on people's preference.
So who's in for this year's trip!!??!! Let's hear your thoughts & suggestion about when we should go & how we can make this trip even better than last year's trip.
Brian - would you mind being in charge of the lodging & get with Ralph about reserving the family units once we figure out how many we may need? Not sure how true this is but heard that they won't know their new lodging rates unit after January 1st?
O ya it's on
will there be any water left :dontknow:
Freshwater and the Merlot Kid are in. We'll have the trailer house and pontoon again this year. Planning on being in AZ a couple of weeks ahead of SCF and prefish Rosey. Takes us that long to find some. Tight Lines
I'll get with Ralph when we firm up our dates, I'm sure there will be some fishable water. The question will be about launching. I'm stoked! Like Tom would say, "their gettin away!"
Even if some of you are not able to do the full 7 days - please speak up and let us know your thoughts. There's probably somebody else in your same situation. We might be able to come up with a plan to fit your needs......
Thanks Brian for taking care of the lodging. From the early poll numbers it kind of looks as though the trip date is solid but we'll give it more time for people to check their calendars.
Freshwater - glad you guys are in again this year! You to Billy Ho!
I like the April-May week trip or the next one after that. Not too much later though and not into early April as that gets into SCF. I'd like to do 2-3 days less but probably in for the long run of 7 days again. Not looking forward to that long walk on the ramp but looking forward to that heavy line on my fishing pole. Larry, I can head up organizing meals when we get closer. We can chat at SCF or before I can setup a poll to ask about the entire meal situation if it all worked, too many, wrong time, fish fry, all that stuff. Not sure I'd change much about the trip except maybe if you can make it not be windy a few of those afternoons that would be nice.

Ok Matt - You be da man in charge of organizing the meals. I really like what we did last year where one boat/group would come in early & cook supper for the rest of the crew. Thought that worked out good & all the meals were outstanding! We will start another thread just dedicated to this.
Matt, you got the boat to handle that wind now!

Matt, you got the boat to handle that wind now!
You know Brian, I kinda enjoyed just riding along in menrats boat. Easier as I just hoped on and boat was ready!
Nothing wrong with being the backseater for sure!
Put me down as a possible. I need to find a backseater first, then make sure it's all good on the homefront.
Quote from: sparkchaser on October 25, 2013, 06:40 AMPut me down as a possible. I need to find a backseater first, then make sure it's all good on the homefront.
Don't think the backseat thing will be an issue Champ.....
Which is a great subject to bring up Dave - If you'd like to join us and want to fill a backseat or three,
please speak up!! I was kind of thinking that we would have an extra boat or two anyway. Heck, I'm sure somebody would be able to fish out of a different boat each day if they wanted to! And that's what is great about this group - willingness to open their backseat(s) for others just to share in the Lake Powell experience.........
My brother Tim and myself are in for a cabin of our own. We are bringing our wives this year. I have also offerded one of the three bedrooms to Halibit Warrior if he decides he can make it. I been working full time since last years trip and do not think I will extend the contract another 6 months. Had enough of those 45 to 50 hour weeks. Im supposed to be retired. Either way, job or no havent fished much since last year so I'm in all the way. Got my boat problems fixed , did some rework on my trolling motor electrical system which I checked out at Oak Bay later in summer on my house boat trip.
Sorry my brother and I have missed the meetings. He should be eligible for membership with the next meeting if we can ever make it.
Halibit Warrior had hand surgery a month or so ago and has been out of the fishing game, but he is about ready to join in again. So hopefully we will join you guys again, even before April trip.

Well, looks like this is indeed fact that our buddy Ralph at Hall's Crossing is no longer employed there. So much for getting hooked up like last year!
Well we need someone to call the "new guy" and see if he can make us a deal. Anything less than normal pricing for reserving 3-5 trailers is a deal for me.

Hey Bill - what's the chances of you joining us in April?
I will make inquires as to availability & deals.
Just heard back from the guys at bullfrog marina. They will give us a discounted rate of $125 per night ( no free nights this year) so I need to know how many units to reserve. I'm thinking 4, so chime in about who's going so we can lock this down ASAP. There is a big bass tourney that week so we need to lock this in.
Me and lady friend Peggy for sure with 1660 Lund deep V.
Perhaps son and grandson.
Can bring pop-up if there is 4 of us.

I'm in along with Mike & Debbie - Brian, this was the husband & wife that I work with (along with being former members of the Walleye club) that went with us on our first trip a couple years ago. Remember when we all crammed into one trailer!
So count me as 3 w/ one room for them and then whatever for me.....
And the poll numbers show the dates to be Saturday, April 26th to Saturday, May 3rd

Couple questions: Are they asking for any money down to reserve a family unit? If we decided to reserve 5 units instead of the 4, what would be the cancellation policy on one unit (date to cancel & any $$ penalty)? And I'm assuming that is $125 without tax?
Remember I flunked math but I'll try (fingers & toes) to do the math: $125 per night for 7 nights= $875 per unit. If I remember correctly from previous years, that $$ amount was then divided by the number of people in each trailer?
my brother Tim and I are in for a trailer for ourselves and our wives. Please send me a reply so I know you have us. Also how can my brother get signed up as a member, he has already attended 2 meetings?

I think WheatThin was possible last year too.
It will be a game time decision for me. I have decided to Retire from the AF and my effective retirement date is 1 May 14 and I will be having a retirement ceremony on 11 Apr with all kinds of family and friends in town for that. Biggest kicker is I start full time nursing school 5 May and am not sure what my schedule will be yet. I will be watching what I'm spending these next few months since I know my income will be cut in half. If I do go it would probably only be for a few of the days not all of them and I probably will not be taking my boat so I would have to backseat with someone. More to come.....

Hey Guys, I believe I'll be in for this trip however not for the full seven days. I'll need to check my schedule, I usually camp on the lake, but if everyone is doing group cookouts or whatever I'll maybe upgrade from the lake beach to the campgrounds next to Tom.

Nice! Yeah, Tom has a pretty sweet campsite with a very cool backyard. And yes, group cookouts will be in the works when we get closer to the date.
so brian will you be joining us with your new rig at the campsite.
I'll be taking the new Tundra to the cabin, much easier drive.
I just reserved my cabin for the week, Tom is a definite, no word from Chris still. Willie is saying he is going for sure with his friend Cliff. So the deal is someone needs to reserve a cabin in their name for $125 per night, can cancel anytime up to 24 hrs prior without penalty. We can work out final pieces closer to the date. Craig plans on going with a friend as well.
Contact either john Motley or Jeremy Russell to secure your cabin. 435-684-3032
So I take it they won't reserve a number (like 4) trailers without a deposit? Which means everybody is somewhat on their own to reserve their accommodations, if I understand you correctly? And I'm also assuming we need to mention the club for the $125 per night rate?
Right on all counts. Someone needs to be the go to person for each trailer.
Thanks Brian!
Ok Dick & SteveJ - reserve your Family Unit and let us know how you made out. Matt - pick a group to bunk with or reserve a unit with Willie & his friend? Thoughts & comments?

I talked with Jeremy and he was very familiar with our group. Did take a $125 deposit, so I am quite sure it's the unit everyone else is making deposits on.
Willie sounds like he will not be going, so take him off the list. Still haven't heard anything from Chris. Craig is in for sure. He may fish it and then head up to Minnesota from there.
Modified the list on page 4......
I haven't talk with him yet but sounds like Sparkchaser's in. Joe can't make it as he's concentrating all his resources on his Alaska trip. Brian, is Craig a single or still bringing a friend? And what's his thoughts about lodging arrangements?

I'll need to confirm what trailer I'm sleeping in at some point. Several open spots but not sure how many of those trailers are actually reserved. Can't wait to troll past that rock pile and feel that heavy line.
Did we get any 4lbrs last year? Seems like we didn't get any lunkers. I still would like an 8lbr as that's a goal back in Nebraska catching these.
Quote from: OneBlade on February 06, 2014, 08:38 AMI'll need to confirm what trailer I'm sleeping in at some point. Several open spots but not sure how many of those trailers are actually reserved.
Matt, I know that the trailers both Dick & I have reserved are full at this time. We'll need to hear from Brian, Steve & possibly Craig on this.
Tom has a friend that wants to go with us as well. Craig doesn't have access to the posts so he can't chime in yet. I've been sick as a dog all week, not doing much but coughing my ass off feeling miserable.
Billy Ho's going to bring me his very comfortable cot this year. I've done this in the past & it worked out fine.
Who knows Steve or Craig enough to call them and get them to reserve their trailers? I'd just like to make sure I'm in a reserved trailer and either of those will work. I doubt they'll fill up but you never know and would hate to get into a situation where lack of timing caused a situation where we couldn't get them reserved. Sounds like it's a no-risk deal either as you can cancel 24 hours in advance and no fee charged including $125 reservation fee, right? Whoever gets a hold of them can tell them if they'd like I can reserve but I need their names, phone numbers, and emails to keep track and make sure they are still attending. Also, ask the guy if they can try and put our trailers near each other.
By the way, I think I'm mostly set for lures and such. I tied 10 or so lindy rigs with a little heavier pound test so hopefully won't break as much. Have my bottom bouncers, a few wally mack rigs, some jigs. I'm ready. Hope weather is good.
Matt,
SteveJ has already reserved a unit but he'll have to respond as to whether the extra bedroom is available.
As for Craig, Brian knows him & it also sounds like he'll be at the February meeting. Brian might have more info?
And your credit card does get charged $125 as a deposit....
Matt - I sent craigm a PM & I also CC'ed you in on it...
Correct Larry I have reserved 1 room, will know about 2nd by Feb meeting, which I will be attending!
Oneblade, got my 81/2 lbr hanging over my fireplace.
Do you have to be a member to get a room in one of the units?
Quote from: SteveJ on February 09, 2014, 02:23 PMDo you have to be a member to get a room in one of the units?
Not at all Steve! In fact, the husband/wife friends staying in my unit are not AZCA members. Former Walleye club members but that's a different story
Can we order the nightcrawlers and plan the nighttime meals and such say right after the spring crappie fest? Main question was nightcrawlers in case we needed to send our orders in before April 9th timeframe. Meals we can plan for sure and I don't mind covering that thread when the time comes providing ample input on if group meals worked, what to change, and then what to bring this trip. But I sort of don't want to take away from SCF and figure we hold off until then possibly even having planning meeting for the trip at the event. Most gets done on the website though as not everyone is at SCF.
By the way, anyone else get the Bass Pro Shop "Northern Angler" magazine? Nice to have real magazine of walleye lures and such instead of having to search a bunch of websites.
Quote from: OneBlade on March 07, 2014, 08:03 AMBut I sort of don't want to take away from SCF and figure we hold off until then possibly even having planning meeting for the trip at the event. Most gets done on the website though as not everyone is at SCF.
Yeah Matt, we will continue the Powell trip planning after SCF. If anybody wants to have a quick meeting like we did last year at SCF, please speak up. Otherwise, like Matt said most of the trip planning will be done online.
The one thing we might want to discuss now was the post I read from Orrin (O from Wi) who mentioned "This means I will be here for the Powell run". Hey Orrin, please let us know your thoughts - are you joining us & if so, are you solo? Looking for an open room in a family unit or tenting with Rats? Bringing your boat or looking for a backseat?
And I know CraigM mentioned he's also interested in this trip but it'll be a game time decision for him, if I remember our conversation correctly
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think there's one open room available in SteveJ & Matt's family unit? Also one open bedroom in Brian's unit?
As for Crawlers - Dave'll be in charge of them since he lives so close to Liar's Korner. Again, thanks for volunteering Champ! :glasses9: He'll continue the crawler thread here: http://forum.azcrappie.com/index.php/topic,1731.30.html We should probably figure out how many crawlers we want starting after SCF so Richard can get them on order. Dave will have more info...
And Matt, please go ahead & start a new thread for meal planning whenever you're ready after SCF.
I already notified Brian but I am sorry to say I will not be able to make it on your Lake Powell trip due to issues demanding my attention back in Minnesota the end of April. I was really looking forward to it as I have spent the last 50 years of my life pursuing walleyes all over the Midwest and Canada and although I have fished the waweappage area extensively . The Bullfrog area of Lake Powell sounds to me like virgin water waiting to be explored .I will be at lake Powell next week fishing the lone rock and warm creek area around wahweap . I will post the results of what ever I find out . Have a great trip
It looks like I have an open room in our cabin if someone wants to fill it.

I think Tom is thinking of doing the trailer thing but need his confirmation. Wheatthin, there's still a way to get you on this trip even if half-time. Speak up and I'm sure we can get you on a boat.
Just checked the water level, it is 23' lower than last year at this time. Good news is the snow pack is at 109%. Be prepared to look at new places.
you guys better hurry, waynesword website is lighting up with fishing reports and as of yesterday the lake has started to ever so slowly go up.
Weather doesn't look good for this sat- sun, debating going up Sunday & coming back on Sunday...Anyone feel the same way?
Not sure what we can do about trailer reservations. Would assume we could bump them one day. Was going to wait until Thurs/Fri to make decision. Sat breezy with rain conditions not good but Sunday could still be good.

Walleye bite in bad weather. Bring it on.
Absolutely no weather issues here!!! We've been there when it was blowing 20 mph. A little choppy in the river channels but plenty of places to hide for a half day or so while the front passes by. What's a fishing trip without a little weather. We'll be heading north early morning on Saturday as scheduled.........
that's what walleye chop is all about.
We're leaving on Friday staying Friday nite at the Elks Lodge in Flagstaff. :3some: : Going the rest of the way Saturday. Start fishing Sunday :whip2: :headbang:

Yeah I need a 6hp gas motor on the back of my boat for that don't I?
A good drift sock will work wonders...
No worries on the breeze plenty of great fishing in the back of the canyons

As long as you don't mind the white caps and 3-4' rollers pounding you on the way there. I recall we had a windy day last year and it was a bitch fishing/launching/retrieving! called it quits really early that day.
We've got room on the pontoon if any body needs a spot. We have some electronics on board. Could use a few lessons.

ya we had like a 10-15 mile run that day. came out of the canyon to main lake with 3ft. rollers. life jackets on, strap everything down, and hold on for a hell of ride. I'm game
I just got off the phone with Jeremy @ Halls crossing, he said that if anyone wants to check in on Sunday versus Sat that is fine. As it stands I think we are still planning on going up on Sat, probably won't be fishing if it's storming. Toms got the cards & poker chips ready to go.

Yeah Bruce, that's one of my favorite sites as I check out to see what's going on up there often. Didn't know if Brian chatted about the Walleye bite while on the phone.....
I did ask, he said it has been good up lake by good hope bay. Look for the stained water, that where the best bite has been. Also the water is cooler than normal for this time of year, that not good for the LM bite. He will be calling everyone with cabin info ASAP.
Looks like Tom and I will most likely head up Sat morning. I'll text those of you I have numbers for when we leave. Freshwater, what's your or MerlotKid's cell #?
Mine's : 208-521-5611 Merlot's : 208-521-0569 Best to call merlot if traveling as I have to get ear phones on to talk also we have the new MT350R Motarolla walkytalky's on when traveling as we don't know where dead spots are and in case of trouble we can hear with outplugs as they are real clear. Channel 7-1
God speed to all you who are going up. Have fun and be safe. Sure wish we were tagging along. Us dry landers will be expecting some great reports.
All the Best to everyone going. Somebody try a Red Slowdeath Owner with a green bead. Good Fishing!

Wow, that's a good outlook on weather.
Lite snow in Flagstaff now. Winds die down after 11AM Pacific, looks clear east and north.
Current plans call for leaving Flag around 11.
Just checked weather in Tuba City. 50+ mile winds for this afternoon. Going to stay one more day in Flag then leave on Sunday morn. Good luck to everyone.
Nice big snowflakes in flagstaff!! Roads wet but no issues. Clearing to the north though. Saw freshwater in frys parking lot. Stopped for breakfast & saw Brian drive past.
looks like more weather headed your way from the west, stay safe
Drove through rain, then sleet, then snow, then rain, then hail, then rain, then snow, then fog. We are here! Diehards cousinlll, fishhawk, sparkchaser, and tom already on the water.
Glad everyone made it OK. See you tomorrow.
Steve, he moved us to trailer 111.
