What size is used mainly? I don't want to gut hook the fish but I want to catch them and have the ability to release if too big (Breeder stock) Or too small.

I use #6's, true turn or the BPS ones (can't remember the name) and I can't remember the last time I gut hooked a Crappie. I think the true turn feature has more to do with this then the size.

Funny you say that. I've only seen 1 crappie that couldn't be released because of hooking. That was last month at Rosey. Larry caught it. it had blood coming from its gills like a trout. Never seen one hooked that deep before.

I have been using #2 and #4 hooks. Been doing a LOT of fishing and not a lot of catching!

I use #4 aberdeen hooks for minnows.

Does anyone believe that the #2's are too big?

I fogot,, I have been using those hooks I won at a meeting raffle at Alamo last spring,,, but I fogot what kind they were. I know I have to get them on line. Any help here? I need to order some. My partner swears by the red ones?? I guess as long as they are THIN like Aberdeen (my old favorite) your minnows will live much longer and give you more action.

				I was wrong, I use #4's

I use these in red  #4

Hey O - if you're talking about the small red mosquito hooks then see Sparkchaser's link.  But if you're talking about the #4 lite wire aberdeen hooks, those are Mustad #37361 light blue in size 4.
Wadefisherman's the guy who recommended them to me/us...

Guys I thank you for the info, IF I go Saturday I am going to try for more Crappie.

A big part of the size hook I use is the the size of the minnow's. Smaller sized minnow's I use a # 6 aberdeen hook with larger sized crappie minnows i will use a # 1 or 2 aberdeen hook. In general the hook size can also come into play if i'm fishing brush piles. I have found that the smaller hooks seem to work better for me. Crappie are finicky so i suggest keep a good assortment of hook sizes on hand.

Capt hooks online has the hooks that Larry alluded to, Mac turned me on to them.
