Dave, Tom & Wally - 11 Walleye
Mike, Debbie & Matt - 9 Walleye

Holy cow.....thats some some good numbers right off the bat.   Nice Work AZCA crew.  Put Sandman's effort in the future-mix and a 50+ day won't be out of reach.

Stay Safe.

Nice, keep up the good work. Are you running far for them? Have they grown any? Or is it the same size as years past?
Stay safe.

 Cousinlll,

What depth and what baits are the best producer? Is Jigs or trolling the best presentation? Any color preference? Or are you finding  a repetition of last year?

My brother and I are getting excited by what we are seeing already. Good luck to all of and be safe.

Keep the reports coming.

Forgive me tonight guys as it was Bill & my evening to cook supper so I don't have all today's numbers as of yet.  I do know it was a tough Walleye day for most. Here's the  numbers I have for today (Monday):

Matt & Marvin 11
Dave, Tom & Wally 3
Kelley & Patti 3
Bill & LLL 3
Mike & Debbie 3
Jerry & Timbo 7

I'll fill in the above numbers tomorrow

Dick:
Bottom bouncing crawler rigs seem to be the ticket. Gold colors for us but I'll ask around. 20 to 30 seems like the depth most are coming at.

Thanks Larry,
Sounds like a rough day for you guys. Been watching the weather.Barometer dropped from 29.80 to 29.70. Not always a good thing, but some of my best walleye fishing was in such weather if you could find them. I have confidence you guys will get some good days yet. My weather shows T storms for you tonight but clearing tonight and a warming trend with partly cloudy and sunny on Thursday. Cooler friday with partly cloudy but no weather. Looks likt the front has moved through.

More question is troll speed .8 mph?or slower???. What is your water surface temperature? Is the water cloudy up by warm creek like last year?

A suggestion, with the cooli air temps and wind, try some jugs or crawlers in shallow water as shallow as 2 feet (casting). I think I missed trying that last year but believe if you have coudy to muddy water, with cool surface temps, you might find them shallow looking for warm water and more active food real shallow.

Just a thought. Remember Brian hit them big time back in the shallows at the end of the canyon in muddy water and no structure. They may be hiding from weather/wind and looking for warm water and active feed.

Keep us posted. Stay safe all of you. I'm rooting for you all.

Dick

I updated yesterday's numbers above.

As for today:

Dave, Tomy & Wally 14
Bill, Matt & LLL 12
Mark & Marvin 7
Kelley, Jerry & Timbo 2
Mike & Debbie 1

Yes, bit of weather today with light to moderate showers depending on where you were on the lake. As for Bill, Matt & myself it was not a big deal as we were prepaired with rain gear and it actually was cool seeing the canyons during weather. Rain for us was spotty and light. We were hoping that would turn on the bite but still had to grind to bring home 12 fish.

Water temps were mid to upper 60s and no mud line as the lack of snow melt this year has the lake fairly clear.  We are trolling around 1 mph staying around 15 to 30 ft range. Bluegill or Perch colors along with gold has been working for us.

Looks like conditions same as year before last. Jeremy tellsme high 60s (68 is the magic number. Looks like you have hit it right.

Those gizzards are getting bigger and bigger, might be why they have pulled a few stripers in the 20-30lb range now up there.  It'll be interesting to see if the stripers can maintain as they use to peak out at around 5lbs.  Anyone have a lure that size and shape?  :fish:
Title: Re: 2015 Powell Fish Count
Post by: OneBlade on May 08, 2015, 04:04 PM
Last year dozens of stripers caught often in the 3-5lb range.  This year, only a handful caught total (less than 5?).  Not sure where they went or possibly we are all on the bottom and the stripers aren't (except of course Tom with his senko).

they have netted some big gizzard shad out of roosevelt that size and bigger, only thing that is going to eat them in rosy is a 30-40lb flat head :o

guys reporting on waynesword that stripers are acting weird now at Powell, hope your weather holds out, rain here at the house been windy all day and snowing in Flagstaff :banghead:
Title: Final Day's Count
Post by: cousinlll on May 08, 2015, 08:36 PM
Here are the final Walleye numbers:

Friday

Dave, Tom & Wally 14
Bill & LLL 10
Marvin & Mark 7
Kelley & Patti 2
Mike & Debbie - did not fish

If Boo did the math right, for the trip the group caught 234 Walleye. Respectable given the fact we were one boat down most of the trip & minus 3 guys the last few days.  Good job to all!!!

Now for the winners of the longest Walleye & Goon Fish contest:

Taking the prize for the longest Walleye was Mrs. Sandman!  Patti caught a 21 1/8" Walleye

Winner of the longest Goon Fish contest was Tommy Fishman catching a 18 3/4" Striper

Dick - couple guys brought their little inexpensive box freezers you can get from Home Depot or Lowes.

Thanks for the idea Larry, I think I will invest in one. I'll be looking forward to talking to you on Sunday after you return. Give my best to all the guys and I hope you all have safe and uneventful travel home. Also, if any of you do have some sort of problem delaying you overnight, remember I have a place up in Flagstaff you can overnight at.

Geez, what a great trip again.  I'm already trying to figure out a way to get my boys and parents up there.  The boys would love hooking onto one of them walleyes.  I wanted to first say thanks to Tim and Jerry being great cabin mates even with boat trouble we made it work.  The AZCrappie crew stepped up for sure!  I was able to ride on Marv's boat once, Larry's boat twice, Mike and Debbie's boat once, and offers to ride along with Kelley and Patti's boat.  Hell, Dave's boat had 3 people and I wouldn't doubt if push came to shove, they'd add a 4th!  The generosity of everyone was unmatched and I wanted to say thanks again for that.  I kinda liked seeing how each boat fished - can I do that again next year? :-)  Was always fun to have Tom there with his "excitement" and various fishing techniques.  I don't know how he does it but wow, managing 2 poles while not getting snagged fishing both walleye and smallmouth he still caught 12 one of those days!

Fish fry was a success, thanks Timbo for really making that come together.  Meals, wow everyone put on some great stuff.  Boats came in early to prepare solid dinners each night.

Jerry, thanks for the cards' box.  My boys and I are going to stain it tomorrow hopefully stay tuned for pictures.  Jerry, I do hope you and Merlot Kid still make the trip up next year.  Brian, we missed you for sure.  I hope your health improves so you can resume this trip next year.  It wasn't the same without you there.  Dick, Joe - perhaps you too can resume your attendance next year.  I don't see the walleye fishing slowing down anytime soon.

Oneblade,

I definitely plan to join you all next year. Next week ends my two year job at HWL. Working on a part time job with them. In fact have a meeting next week in that regards.

Brian, hope things are looking better for you. My prayers are with you for a positive resolution with you illness so you can fully enjoy fishing again. I look forward joining with you on lake Mary and I hear Apache is beginning to show greater walleye activity.

Here is a final run down of our trip this week. The fishing began strong with 7 Walleye in 2 hours the afternoon we arrived last week. The only good day we had until Tuesday of this week. We were plagued by thunderstorms, wind and rain showers the rest of the week. We did get 10 walleye the day after our arrival between storms. All were caught north of bullfrog on shoals on the marina side of the bay and the shoal directly north of the launch ramp. From that point on they came in 3's and 4 per day. Final count was 29 fish. We did hit about 30 of the largest bluegill I have ever caught on the shoal in front of Warm creek. We had two days with clear weather in the morning that allowed us to get up lake. We caught no walleye off of any of the rock slides during the entire trip. They all seemed to be on underwater shoals except the day we made it to Knowles canyon. Those were caught off of walls in the back of the canyon.
Hammered brass, and the holographic perch and shad #4 spinners with slow death hooks were the best producers for us. Once again, my lindy approach (only tried one day) failed to produce.

We did have a good time however and a good trip without incident. Looking forward to joining you all next year.

Not sure the last week in May might be a better bet as water temps were below the magic 64 degrees due to weather most of the time. When it hit 65 degrees we had the best walleye bite  which is what Jeremy advised me is the right temperature. 64-68 degrees.

Well the merc dealer called at 1;00 and the merc Mtr on pontoon was fixed. $607.00 $388 Parts and 190 Labor + shop parts and taxes.  A new fuel pump, a float,& a hose???  I asked for the taken out parts as some times they can be fixed and some times you can see what caused it or how to remedy it.  Like could the dang rough roads jared something or snapped it  or caused it to spring a leek, but he said the mechanics had all gone home for memorial day and he couldn't find it.  Only 60 hours on Mtr. Anyway I'm good to go.  Onward !!! :3some:  Have a fabulous Memorial Day and remember our active and Vets.
