Title: Lake Powell 2023
Post by: sparkchaser on December 08, 2022, 08:29 AM
I've always had this trip lined up by now, but wanted to wait to see what kind of inflow the lake would have this year. Currently the lake is at 3527 which last year was at 3540.

If you remember we waited to have the executive launch extended out to accommodate 3525 last year. I've read they plan to extend it once again.

I've also read that people are dirt launching below the Bullfrog main ramp. Have not heard of anyone dirt launching on the Halls side.

Just thought I would throw this out there to see what you guys that normally go want to do. My freezer is empty, so I'd like to give it a try if possible

I'm up for it any way it can be swung.

I thought I read Lake Powell is rising 1 foot per day.  Bullfrog north ramp just reopened: https://wayneswords.net/threads/nps-news-release-may-6-2023.8596/#post-91672
I guess we will see how it rises over the next couple months.

I read in a few places hydrologist think that lake may rise over 60 ft by July.  Hard to believe but it would be a blessing.

It's still low, but 8 feet up past last year at this time. I might be inclined to do an October trip this year. Maybe not a week, but 3 to 4  days. I've heard the walleye bite is good then. The runoff should be obviously done by then. Maybe we will have a clearer picture on things in a couple of months

I have not researched anything on the south side of the lake. As far as the accommodations we use in the north side. 4 hour less drive

Dave, I very well may be game for a 3-4 day trip in Oct or any time of year.  I know it's like "taking candy from a baby" fishing for walleye in May but don't know how we'd do in October.

I'd also be game for south side Page trip stay in hotel or something and fish daily. I posted some questions about drive time (in boat) from south ramp to some of the coves up north (Warm Creek Bay, Padre Bay, and Last Chance Bay).  One person mentioned "it took almost 2 hrs to get to the end of Last Chance going 28 mph. the no wake areas are the killer." and another person wrote "It'll take you an hour and a half or a little more to the back of Last Chance."  So would have to consider that when fishing the south end.

Drive time to Bullfrog: 8 hours 40 minutes
Time to Wahweap: 5 hours

We, Tommy and I, ran into a Lund boat in the back of Knowles. If you know Knowles he was fishing the Cottonwood trees maybe halfway back chasing crappie. Probably 3 years ago. He promised that the walleye bite was better in Ocober versus the one we usually chase in April?

I've never thought about it because we always go in April. Something to consider

After considering this proposal all I can think about is the tough fishing we all had after our lakes filled up. Maybe it's best to wait until next spring and do the normal trip. By then it should be stabilized
