Hit Green Valley Lake in Payson today for some Greenie Weenie Fly fishing action. Ended with about 30 Crappie, could of had 100 but moved on to targeting trout. Never catch any larger then 8 inches, but they are so much fun on the fly rod. Used my famous Greenie Weenie on the bottom and a size 16 Gold bead hairs ear on the dropper above. Roughly a 5 foot leader under a strike indicator. Twitch Twitch pause. Repeat.
When in doubt, set the hook!

Wow, I bet that was fun.  I wonder what happens to crappie in those small lakes up there.  I mean they probably grow half as fast as the dessert lakes but why wouldn't there be some lunkers in there eventually?

craigm

up north when Blue Gills or crappies are stunted to a small size it is usually because there are to many for the available forage, maybe there are few natural predators . If there were Flatheads , Northerns , Muskies etc that would be lunch size . Maybe this a good case for keeping smaller fish in selected lakes ?

Thanks for the report. I have an offer on my house. Payson could be in my near future

to bad g and f can't find a forage fish for lakes like in Payson so the crappie and sunfish grow, shad won't survive the cold water but would be neat to find a forage fish from back east that could be planted :dontknow:
