I signed up for helping organize group meals. We met at the SCF and there appeared to be a desire to some community meals as 3-4 people said they'd supply the main dish. These group meals will be really open to anyone attending the Lake Powell trip regardless if you are staying in the family units or camping. However, if you do attend, I will be asking you bring a small side or desert or contribute a donation to the main dish supplier. Once everyone signs up and we see who's bringing what on these meals, we'll have a better idea on how much you'll need to bring. We don't need so much we have wasted food or leftovers, but want to make it sufficient for the 15 or so folks going on this trip. The final count of people will be known at least 1 week before departure. Group meals will have a set start time so those attending know when to show up. Those preparing the meal will need to get off the lake earlier. Those bringing sides should be on time or before. Not sure what time is best but not too early and not too late. Please advise on good time for these meals.
Note: you are on your own for breakfast and lunch meals. Once assignments to each family unit are set, you can coordinate those meals with the others in your unit or boat for that.
This initial post is to first confirm what the main group meals are and what days. From there, I'll ask people to sign up for a side or desert on those meals.
Group Meal #1: Wadefisherman, you mentioned bringing a turkey to smoke or possibly fry. You mentioned a pork loin or some other slab of meat. Let me know which/what you wanted to make as the main dish. We'd like to have this earlier in week as he wants any leftovers for sandwiches/lunch the rest of the week. Only bad part of too early is that someone has to stay back to put coals in the smoker and not sure anyone will want to do that too early in the trip. Frying may be easier?
Group Meal #2: I think The Merlot Kid/Freshwater mentioned bringing ham, correct? Seems like this could be early as well so they can have leftovers for lunch rest of the week.
Group Meal #3: Fish fry.
Group Meal #4: Spaghetti. WallyG is unconfirmed, but he mentioned he could bring this for the group. I'll put it on the schedule but if he drops out, someone else can pick it up or we just won't have this as a group meal.
So again, just initially let's confirm the main meals and then I'll continue discussion to sign up for sides/deserts. I'll also confirm plates, cups, silverware, etc. These meals and probably a lot of them may just be that much easier using disposable stuff.
Proposed schedule - open to move around:
Saturday, April 27 -- Arrival day. Each unit on your own.
Sunday, April 28 -- Ham (TheMerlotKid/Freshwater)
Monday, April 29 --
Tuesday, April 30 -- Turkey/Other (Wadefisherman)
Wednesday, May 1 -- Spaghetti (WallyG)
Thursday, May 2 --
Friday, May 3 -- Fish fry
Saturday, May 4 -- Departure day. Each unit on your own.
Matt it would probably be better to move us to monday as we don't know what time we'll get there and get set up as we'll be coming in on Sunday.
If Wally is unable to go, I'll pick up his day with a pasta dish that I made last year - Cavatini. One batch feed 7-8 last year & is easy to make a double batch. I pre-make & freeze the sauce here & then all I have to do reheat the sauce, cook the noodles & bake. A truck load of garlic bread w/ maybe a side salad and you'll sleep like a baby that night!!
Words of advice:
- Yes, each trailer does have a somewhat stocked kitchen w/ cooking utensils & pot/pans. But I wouldn't count on it & bring everything I need to cook that particular meal with me.
- I would suggest we buy a gross of the large Chinet brand dinner platter paper plates. It'll be a whole lot easeier to use - plus your food per plate ratio will be bettter!
- Choose meals & side dishes that you can pre-make as much as you can at home
As for supper times, what happened last year was that the other boats would fish usually until just before dark, clean their fish just up from the ramp & make it to the trailer at dark. So, not knowing the exact time dark is, I would suggest maybe bringing a lantern or two? And one thought I had was to set out the food outside the cooks trailer on a small folding table or two? I have a small one that I will bring.
Matt, When we provide the ham we will also provide the whole dinner. Thanks!
I might just bring a big pork shoulder and a brisket, slow cooked in the oven. Low maintance, pulled pork sandwiches...yum! I'll get Chris & Tom to bring the sides.
Updated group meal schedule:
Saturday, April 27 -- Arrival day. Each unit on your own.
Sunday, April 28 --
Monday, April 29 -- Ham and all the sides (TheMerlotKid/Freshwater)
Tuesday, April 30 -- Pulled pork sandwiches (Wadefisherman) and the sides (Chris, Tom)
Wednesday, May 1 -- Spaghetti (WallyG) or Pasta dish (cousinlll). Sides including lettuce salad, dressing, and garlic bread (mrokusek - all sides)
Thursday, May 2 --
Friday, May 3 -- Fish fry
Saturday, May 4 -- Departure day. Each unit on your own.
Here's what we still need:
1) Sides for the fish fry
2) Large Chinet brand dinner paper plates
3) Sturdy plastic forks. Might need a few plastic spoons and knives. Napkins
Now check my time but I read that sunset time is 7:11pm at Lake Powell in late April. Does that sound correct? Is setting a dinner time of 7:15 or 7:30 ok? Is that too late? Too early? Given we have 4 group meals, I'd like to make sure it's a time everyone will be o.k. typically getting there around that time.
Matt, good job on getting the schedule organized. Put us down to provide tacos and the trimmings on Thursday. Sounds like a pretty good week menu to me.
I'll always keep my last post the most up to date.
Thursday, May 2 -- Tacos (Tritoon)
Friday, May 3 -- Fish fry
Saturday, May 4 -- Departure day. Each unit on your own.

im in for sun pm. since im camping id like to get rid of the bulk of a large dinner. thinkin gyros or burgers and chicken and corn on the cob.
street corn with lime salt and grilled in the husk. oowee.
Matt, as far as the silverware go, each person could just bring a set from their cabin... Same with plates or glasses... I'm fine with plastic, but it's an option... :dontknow:
Cole slaw and chips OK for a side with the pulled pork??
We will do fried onions and potatoes for the fish fry.
We will bring coleslaw to the fish fry and maybe some cornbread if possible. We could all each bring our own place settings to each meal so that everyone has what they want. just a suggestion.
So, I didn't intend to fill each day with group meals but it appears as though we have. I hope this is o.k. - you are free to reconsider if you signed up for something that you no longer want to.
Updated group meal schedule:
Saturday, April 27 -- Arrival day. Each unit on your own.
Sunday, April 28 -- Gyros/burgers/chicken and corn on the cob (menrats)
Monday, April 29 -- Ham and all the sides (TheMerlotKid/Freshwater)
Tuesday, April 30 -- Pulled pork sandwiches (Wadefisherman) and the sides, e.g. cole slaw and chips (Chris, Tom)
Wednesday, May 1 -- Spaghetti (WallyG) or Pasta dish (cousinlll). Sides including lettuce salad, dressing, and garlic bread (mrokusek - all sides)
Thursday, May 2 -- Tacos (Tritoon)
Friday, May 3 -- Fish fry, fried potatoes/onions (themerlotkid), and coleslaw/cornbread (tritoon)
Saturday, May 4 -- Departure day. Each unit on your own.
I will bring the paper plates, plastic forks, and napkins for all meals - it'll just be easier then having to wash dishes afterwards.
menrats - did you want any help on sides or your meal? That could be a lot of work on your first fishing day.

Also, cousinlll, did you say you had a table we could use to put the food on? Would like to have that setup or known Saturday evening so it's ready for the first meal on Sunday. The table will be right alongside the plates, forks, and napkins so whoever's meal it is can have it all ready.

We are bringing a 6 foot table that can be used where needed.
Way to go guys, I'm not fat enough! This should add to my fat layer :lol_hitting: thanks Matt for putting this together.
Just caught up on the reading. Looks like my group will be doings whatever to fill in the gaps. I've had some issues with my house . Dick is trying to get in the clubhouse so he can pipe in. We could pick up the utensils and condiments or whatever to make it fair . Thoughts?
thx matt. the only help I might need is with the corn. u soak it the peel the husk back pull out the silk butter and lime salt it and wrap husk back and pop on the grill to heat. this is a process. the rest is chopping cukes and tomatoes and heatin the gyro meat. no sweat total time 1.5 hours 2 scotchies and 3 beers. we could perhaps have someone do a pan of brownies for afterwords? someone with an oven.
Since I'll be fishing with menrats, I'll help prepare that meal on Monday. Tom, I can bring corn on the cob if you bring main dish. I can make brownies as well. I'm assuming they have a normal stove there right? Need me to bring charcoal and fluid?
Halibut Warrior - could you take over sides on the Wed, May 1 meal? It's salad, dressing, and garlic bread. Short prep time so hopefully wouldn't lose much time fishing.

sundownish excellent.
Hi all,
Sorry to be so late to the party but it took time to get into the club site. It sounds like you have all out distanced Joe, my brother and myself as far as supporting the main meals. We can bring any sides you might like or support one of the meal preparers as extra hands and contibute to the food cost in any way we can. It would be better if all three of us did something together with one of the group so our boat will only be in early on one day, but then again, some of you may also have more than one day in the kitchen since I do not know how thw split works out with each cabin.
Any ways Im on board now and will support any way I can.

Dick, welcome to the site! I'm sure Matt will jump in here & give you some direction.
For now, if Wally G doesn't come along on this trip it looks like your group will be paired with me for Wednesday's pasta night. I was thinking a side salad along with a truck load of garlic bread would be great with the pasta dish I have planned.
And Matt, I'll also bring my 5' folding table....
Larry
We can always use some desserts, seem to get a sweet tooth after fishing all day. Ok,ok, that is BS, I always have a sweet tooth. 😛
I'll be in charge of the garlic bread LLL, and make it a one ton long bed:) I also have a couple folding tables to through in,
Dick/sauerrj - Could you bring dessert type items for Mon-Fri meals? I don't think it needs to be anything elaborate or too much - at least something that if it doesn't get eaten one night it might the next. Not critical either so if we eat it all the first couple days then not a big deal. We'll have a lot of food.
HallibutWarrior - Are you bringing salad too for the Wed meal or just bread? Either you or sauerrj I'd say sign up for salad.

I'm going to say 7:30pm prompt for meal time but someone please check my math and let me know.

We my have to play this by ear as some will want to fish to just before dark while others may come in earlier. They will also need time to clean & freeze their catch. That's probably a good overall time though. Probably will need to keep some stuff warm/cold for the late supper crowd. There were a few times on our previous trips we were eating supper in the dark after a long day on the water w/ a stop at the cleaning station.
So for the fish fry on Friday, what we've done in the past is boats would reserve a small portion of their catch for the community fish fry. Last year, Dave & I kept some of the Smallies, big bluegills & walleyes in reserve to share. Also on the last day, boats would usually come in a bit earlier than normal to start packing & rest a bit before the long drive home the next morning.
I see from Matt's list that The Merlot Kid is frying potatoes/onions, Tritoon is taking care of the cole slaw & cornbread w/ Dick feeding our sweet tooth. So my question is, who is doing the frying? Probably would be good to have two friers going. I have one fryer & have also placed an order with my friend who is currently Crappie fishing on Kentucky Lake to bring back some of their killer fish fry breading.
Ok,
Looks like My brother and myself as well as Joe are signed up for bread, salad for the pasta meal with Larry and all the meals deserts. Something like canned fruit, cake, various cookies, other suggestions???
Talked to Wally today and it is very unlikely he can make it unless a snow storm hits the east. So think we should not include him in any final plans.
I have fryer if you want another unit for french frys, fish or whatever.
I assume each person should take responsibility for his own beverages and any special snacks like candy, nuts, chips, etc. should be handled by each cabin along with breakfast and lunch fixings
Yep, I'll handle the salad for Wed night pasta. And bring a couple folding tables too.
The frying saucer will be stowed and ready if needed. Do you have a second tee to tap off of? Got a new burner they sent to me to break in.
OK guys we are close to done on this. Thanks for your patience.
Yes, breakfast, lunch, snacks, and all beverages are on your own. You may want to coordinate at least coffee by trailer. As for dessert - yeah I think things that aren't big effort and can be put away and brought out following night. If you feel adventurous, you could do something like a pie (frozen freezer section) and bake in the oven but may not go far and expensive. Ice cream, ice cream bars, etc. would be great but not sure how you'll get them up there. Pastries from Costco or Sams might be good.
sauerrj - I wasn't planning on bringing bowls or spoons (for ice cream) - but if you want me to let me know.
Wadefisherman - if sauerrj brings his frier, I'm not sure we need yours. I'll put sauerrj down and 2nd one but I'm o.k. if you guys want to change that around. Let me know.
sauerrj - Yes, please bring your frier, oil, batter, and anything else you need to be a 2nd frier.
Cousinlll - you'll do the same?
You guys don't have to be stuck to the frier if you can train one of us watchers to help out.
You know one option to think about here while maybe a little more time consuming but fair would be everything to keep receipts and track of their costs and then we split the total 6 meals cost by those in attendance. Any thoughts on this? Would make it fair as some are chipping in with significant items.

Already in work! Will have my fryer, propane bottle w/ additional outlets to connect to another fryer or two and as you have already read have a lite fish breading on order.
so how many folks do we have all told. 12?
smoking idee: one day when the weather is good we should make a thirty mile run early as a group and then do a shore lunch at oneish somewhere, cool eh?
Quote from: menrats on April 14, 2013, 04:49 PMso how many folks do we have all told. 12?
I think we're at 14 people.
Got my assignments. I'm on for a fryer and oil, batter for the fish fry. Our cabin will take on the deserts, bread and salad for the pasa meal.
For deserts I was thinking of non refrigerated/frozen stuff. Costco pastries, cupcakes, pies that can be warmed up, large cans of fruit 2 varieties and cookies for 6 suppers. Ice cream would be nice but a probable pain to transport and very costly if bought at the marina. Individuals could buy this if they liked to add to the pies, cakes, fruit etc. I would rather not brings bowls and spoons if not required but if group elects to do this I will see what I can put together. 12 to 14 is a big number although we could get paper and plastic if desired.
The idea of spliting the entire costs of all the suppers equally is not a bad idea. I am in for that one.
Thanks sauerrj. I'll be doing brownies on Sunday meal and splitting that meal with menrats so no need for you to bring dessert that first group meal on Sunday.
Menrats will be BBQing steaks at his campsite Saturday night. Anyone interested in BBQ Sat night? C'mon you have all week to fish so stay in and have a few while we talk about all the fish we're gonna catch.
I count 14 people confirmed and up to 16 if Wheatthin and friend show up. Right now, assume 14 people for the group meals and if they respond here soon, we can add them in. I'm sure we'll have extra food. See latest post at:

We will provide our meal without expecting anything to be reimbursed, that just adds more complications. We feel that by providing our meal that makes up for the food we do not have to provide for the rest of the week so it all works out with no worrying about trying to keep track and having to calculate it out.
I'm with Tritoon.

You guys are very generous and I thank you for the free dinners. It does make thing much simpler. So my brother and I are in with the majority.
I talked to Ralph's assistant today... She said there are Mr Coffee type machines in each cabin... also should have all the normal cooking utensils... Didn't know about any big pots for larger meals...
I will probably borrow a pot from one of you guys instead of lugging one up there... It's for about a gallon of baked beans...
The Bass spawn is on, but no info on Crappie or Walleye...
8 walleye caught today in Bullfrog area per Ralph.

I do.
